With the following years the Merlion Cup lost his importance with less visitors. The 1986 edition experienced the worst match attendance since the tournament’s inaugural edition in 1982 and no Merlion Cup tournament has been taken place till 1992.

A lovely jersey but again a heartbreaking story behind this kit. Australia played a very successful football in the 80s, especially with their passionate manager Frank Arok by their side. To get a ticket for the World Cup has always been a hell of a story for the Socceroos with a long way to go. And again, after finished first in the 1985 Oceania Group, Australia had to face with Scotland a strong football team in 2 legs. The „Roos“ lost the away game in Glasgow and a draw at home meant to be their World Cup knockout.

The Australian Soccer Federation (ASF) has organised a special tournament to celebrate Australia's Bicentenary. This tournament was called Gold Cup with Saudi Arabia, Brazil and World Champion Argentina to face the Socceroos. Australia lost their tournament opener against Brazil by only 1 goal (0-1) but were able to beat Saudi Arabia easily (3-0) and also surprisingly Argentina by even 4 goals (4-1). The Gold Cup final against Brazil was a 0-2 loss but the Roos did a very good job and made the supporters believe to make the path to the 1990 World Cup finals. (the 4th try since 1974)

In 1989 Australia played Israel and worn their Adidas home kit. Goalkeeper Jeffrey Olver has actually worn an Umbro kit, but as Adidas had been the offical equipment supplier of the Socceroos, they had to make some little changes to the GK kit.
1. The coat of arms patch has been placed on the right hand side to cover the Umbro logo.
2. The original Umbro shirt had no collar, so Adidas added a collar, to make the shirt looking different compared to the Umbro kit.
